Elucidator System Application Tip: The Versatility of the Venn Diagram Tool

The Venn Diagram tool is useful for extracting information about relationships between biosets; however, you can also use the Venn Diagram tool to compare groups of data, such as any selection from a table, plot, or chart, or compare between visualizations and tables. Use Shift + Right-click and select the Send to Venn Diagram menu item.

This example shows you how to compare upregulated peptides from ratio plots between two replicates.

  1. Make a selection based on criteria. For this example, we will select peptides that are upregulated in a ratio plot.
  2. Choose the first replicate and open a plot at the peptide level. Select the upregulated peptides in the plot.
  3. Use Shift + Right-click to send the upregulated peptides (in red) to the Venn Diagram tool.
Note: Holding the Shift button while right-clicking when is necessary to send multiple selections to the Venn Diagram tool. Right-clicking alone will only send one selection.
  4. Select Send to Venn Diagram.
  5. Provide a descriptive name for your new Venn diagram (e.g., "Replicate 1") and click "OK."

  6. A Venn diagram window will open showing results.
Note: Keep this window open to return to it.

  7. Open a new ratio plot at the peptide for the second replicate.
  8. Use Shift + Right-click.
  9. Select Send to Venn Diagram once more; this time, ensure that you select the Venn Diagram to compare with.
  10. Click OK to and view your results. You can click on any section of the diagram to send it to other tools in the Elucidator system.
Note: The Venn Diagram tool can display up to four groups of data.
